Testosterone is commonly known as the primary male sex hormone, but it’s present and important in all genders. In men, it’s produced mainly in the testes, while in women, it’s made in smaller amounts in the ovaries and adrenal glands.
What Testosterone Does:
Testosterone supports muscle mass and strength, bone density, red blood cell production, fat distribution, and sex drive in all genders. It also influences mood, energy levels, and cognitive function. In men, it’s essential for sperm production.
In Women:
Though present in smaller amounts, testosterone is important for women’s libido, energy, muscle strength, and bone health. It works in balance with estrogen and progesterone throughout the menstrual cycle.
Changes Over Time:
Testosterone levels naturally decline with age in both men and women. In men, this gradual decrease is sometimes called andropause. Low testosterone can cause fatigue, decreased muscle mass, low libido, and mood changes.
