Endocrine System

The endocrine system is a complex network of glands and organs that work together to produce and regulate hormones throughout your body. Unlike the nervous system which sends rapid signals, the endocrine system uses hormones as slower, longer-lasting chemical messengers.

Major Endocrine Glands:
The main glands include the hypothalamus, pituitary (the ‘master gland’), thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries (in women), and testes (in men). Each gland produces specific hormones that target particular organs or tissues.

How It Works:
The endocrine system uses feedback loops to maintain balance (homeostasis). When hormone levels get too high, the system signals to reduce production. When levels are too low, it signals to increase production. This constant adjustment keeps your body functioning properly.

What the Endocrine System Regulates:
This system controls metabolism and energy levels, growth and development, reproduction and sexual function, sleep-wake cycles, mood and stress response, and fluid and electrolyte balance. Essentially, hormones influence nearly every cell, organ, and function in your body.
